沖縄の犬

I was always terrified of them, but Rody managed to convert me. Now I’ll even go out of my way to see them instead of hastily crossing the street, looking away and hoping the one passing didn’t see me.

Here are some of my favorite Okinawan residents.

Gonta (Shiba, male, red)

Gonta is almost too big to be a Shiba!  When I took him for a walk in the Exercise Park, we met another Shiba and he looked huge compared to her – she was a little scared!  However, his owners maintain that he is 100% Shiba.  If he were a person, I guess he’d be an NBA star.  Especially with the way he runs…

Gonta is also the most mischievous Shiba I’ve met – he always seemed so calm and docile when I petted him at home, so one day I decided to let him off his chain to see if I could pick him up and get him to play with me in the garage.  He behaved himself for about 5 minutes (during which this picture was taken) and then all of a sudden, without any warning, took off running!  I had to chase him for about 2 hours, only getting close every time he stopped briefly to pee, before some kids finally caught him and helped me bring him home.  You’d think I would be so mad after that I’d never want to see Gonta again, but he’s still my favorite Shiba.  After all, I really couldn’t blame him – I talked to his owner afterwards and it seems like he hardly gets to go for walks.  It would be like depriving me of taro pies for a year, then putting a big bag of freshly-baked ones in front of me and expecting me to share.  Besides, the way he holds his hand out when he meets another animal is just about the cutest thing I’ve ever seen.

Gen (Shiba, female, red/cream)

I met Gen at the D-1 Pic event in Nishihara (she was in the petting area).  At first I thought she was a boy because her name was Gen.  Even though I only met her the one time, I got her to come when I called her name.  I thought she was really smart.

I really want to get Gen and Gonta together!  Their kids would be super cute!

Shibako (Shiba, female, red)

Shibako has more of that “standard Shiba” look than Gonta and Gen do.  Unfortunately, she’s not a possible match for Gonta since he’s nearly twice her size (she’s a Mame-shiba) and she’s been operated on anyway.  Shibako loves to eat and hates to go for walks, a combination of traits that, although they’d be a health risk in a human, seem to suit her well enough.
